¡Hola! Feliz martes para todos. 

Hace pocos días tuve la oportunidad de conversar un poco con Sylvain Reynard, autor de la trilogía de Gabriel y la serie Noches en Florencia, que es además uno de mis autores favoritos. En esta ocasión hablamos un poco sobre su carrera, su relación con sus lectores hispanos, el futuro de la serie Noches en Florencia y sus próximos proyectos. Es una oportunidad muy especial para mí, ya que además, dada su experiencia en el mundo literario, pude pedirle algunos consejos (que a ti, que quizás sueñas convertirte en escritor, podrían ayudarte).

M: When did you realized you wanted to be a writer? 

¿Cuando descubriste que querías ser escritor?

SR: I’ve wanted to write since I was young. But I published my first novel, “Gabriel’s Inferno,” in 2011.

He querido ser escritor desde que era joven. Pero publiqué mi primera novela, El Infierno de Gabriel, en 2011.

M: Some authors say their stories simply come to them (the characters talk to them, they dream about the scene, etc.,) and some others talk about exhaustive research and a complex creative process. How do you face a new project? 

Algunos autores dices que sus historias simplemente vienen a ellos (los personajes les hablan, sueñan las escenas...), otros hablan de un exhaustivo proceso de investigación, y un complejo proceso creativo. ¿Cómo enfrentas un nuevo proyecto?

SR: Usually, the story appears in my imagination. But it always takes some consideration, some planning, and an outline of the story.

Por lo general, la historia aparece en mi imaginación. Pero siempre toma cierta consideración, algo de planificación y un bosquejo de la historia.

M: The Gabriel's series was your first published work. It was a huge success as you hit the NYT Best Selling authors list with them. Some of the key points in the story are related with redemption and forgiveness. It wasn't the typical message in a romance novel where the hero wins the girl's heart with a heroic act or with a grand gesture. How do you think that message impacted the Romance reading community? 

Los libros de la serie de Gabriel fueron tu primer trabajo publicado, y fue un gran éxito, ya que fuiste incluido en la lista de Mejores Vendidos del New York Times con ellos. Algunos de los puntos claves de esta historia tienen que ver con la redención y el perdón. Este no es el típico mensaje en una novela romántica, donde el héroe se gana a la chica con un acto heroico o con una gran demostración de amor. ¿Cómo crees que este mensaje, tu mensaje, impactó a la comunidad de lectores de Romance?

SR: Thank you. As you mention, my stories are atypical but I think that’s what makes them interesting. I explore themes related to love, sex, forgiveness, and redemption because those are the themes that I believe resonate with all readers, around the world. And I think that’s why I have an international readership.

Gracias. Como lo mencionaste, mis historias son atípicas pero creo que eso es lo que las hace interesantes. Exploro temas como el amor, el sexo, el perdón y la redención porque esos son temas que yo creo que tocan a todos los lectores, alrededor del mundo. Y creo que por eso que tengo un púbico internacional.





M: After writing a Contemporary Romance series that was translated in many many different languages, being successful in each one and with thousand of fans everywhere, you wrote a Paranormal Romance series. You were pretty adventurous with that decision. Do you feel it was the right thing to do at the moment?

Después de escribir una serie de romance contemporáneo, que fue traducida a muchísimos idiomas, siendo exitosa en todos ellos y con cientos de seguidores alrededor del mundo, escribiste una serie de romance paranormal. Fuiste muy arriesgado con esa decisión. ¿Crees que era lo correcto?

SR: I had started the paranormal series first, before “Gabriel’s Inferno,” but I put it aside. So once The Gabriel Series was finished, I was eager to get back to “The Raven.”

Yo empecé la serie paranormal primero, antes de El Infierno de Gabriel, pero la hice a un lado. Así que cuando la serie de Gabriel estuvo terminada, yo estaba ansioso de regresar a La Alondra (título de The Raven en Español)

M: The Florentine Series is a story with a particular lead couple. Raven, the heroine, is a brave and beautiful woman. But her beauty isn't exactly into the modern canons. She's not 'thin and perfect' as the models we see in advertisements. With Raven, you show (at least I felt it this way) that being perfect in the outside isn't important compared to be beautiful in the inside. She also inspired a campaign in the Hispanic community known as #YoSoyRaven (I'm Raven). When you read so many women taking the lead, accepting themselves and saying "I'm brave and beautiful no matter how I look like; I'm Raven," how do you feel?

La serie Noches en Florencia es una historia con unos protagonistas muy particulares. Raven, la heroína, es una mujer valiente y hermosa pero no exactamente según los patrones actuales. Ella no es delgada y perfecta como las modelos en los comerciales. Con Raven muestras, al menos yo lo veo de ese modo, que tener una imagen perfecta no es más importante que nuestra belleza interior. Ella inspiró también una campaña en la comunidad hispana, conocida como #YoSoyRaven. Cuando lees a tantas mujeres alzar la voz, aceptándose a sí mismas y diciendo "Soy valiente y hermosa, sin importar cómo luzca: Yo soy Raven". ¿Cómo te sientes?

SR: I didn’t know when I wrote about Raven how readers would respond to her, but I have been so overwhelmed with the positive response.  I wrote Raven as I see her – beautiful but not the way some parts of our culture see beauty, disabled but not weak, heroic and courageous. So many readers have written to me to say that they see themselves in Raven and for that, I’m grateful.

No sabía, cuando escribí sobre Raven, cómo los lectores responderían, pero me he sentido abrumado por la respuesta tan positiva. Escribí a Raven como la veo, hermosa pero no como algunos sectores de nuestra cultura ven la belleza, discapacitada pero no débil, heroica y valiente. Muchos lectores me han escrito para decir que se ven a sí mismos en Raven, y por eso estoy agradecido.



M: The Prince of Florence is an interesting man. He has lived for so long and has seen the world change, transform, and that knowledge is spread throughout the Florentine Series pages. Did you feel connected with William in any way? Do you see yourself as an 'ancient soul'?

El Príncipe de Florencia es un hombre interesante. Él ha vivido por mucho tiempo y ha visto el mundo cambiar, transformarse, y ese conocimiento se refleja en las páginas de la serie Noches en Florencia. ¿Te sientes conectado con William de alguna manera? ¿Te ves a ti mismo como un alma antígua?


SR: In some respects, I feel ancient.  But yes, I feel connected with William. I had to be able to adopt his perspective in order to write about him. I thought about what it would be like to see the world change over time and to be tired of it. I also thought about how he looked down on the city – always from high places atop buildings – always from the perspective of someone not human. Then I let my imagination fly.

En algunos aspectos, me siento antíguo. Pero sí, me siento conectado con William. Tenía que ser capaz de adoptar su perspectiva para poder escribir sobre él. Pensaba cómo sería ser capaz de ver el mundo cambiar a través del tiempo y estar cansado de eso. También pensaba sobre cómo él vigilaba la ciudad, siempre desde lo alto de los edificios, siempre desde la perspectiva de alguien que no es humano. Entonces mi imaginación voló.


M: I've been a reader of Paranormal books for too many years. I started when I was a teenager with Anne Rice's books. I've read lots and lots of books about vampires and other creatures, but the Florentine series surprised me a lot. Not only because of the character’s nature, but for the plot. In this series, you explore a world full of darkness to send a message about hope, compassion and love. Is Sylvain Reynard a hopeless romantic?

He sido lectora de romance paranormal por muchos años. Empecé cuando era adolescente con los libros de Anne rice. He leído muchísimos libros sobre vampiros y otras criaturas, pero la serie Noches en Florencia me sorprendió mucho. No solo por la naturaleza de sus personajes, sino por la trama. En esta serie exploras un mundo lleno de oscuridad para enviar un mensaje sobre la esperanza, la compasión y el amor. ¿Eres un romántico sin remedio?

SR: I don’t know. I would say I am hopeful. Hope keeps humanity alive, I think. So yes, I try to spread hope in the world through my writing.




M: Some of the secondary characters, *ahem* Ibarra for example, *ahem* won a lot of fans in the Hispanic community. Have you considered write something (a short novella, an outtake, a blog post... anything!) about him? (pretty please? lol)


Algunos de los personajes secundarios, *tos* Ibarra, por ejemplo, *tos* ganaron muchos admiradores en la comunidad hispana. ¿Has considerado escribir algo (una novela corta, una escena extra, una entrada en tu blog..., cualquier cosa) sobre él? (¡Por favor!)

SR: I didn’t realize this until a short time after “The Raven” was released. And then I was inundated by Spanish speaking readers asking for Ibarra to have his own novel. I’m very glad that they like him. I enjoyed writing him. Maybe someday …

No me dí cuenta de eso hasta poco después de la publicación de La Alondra. Entonces yo estaba inundado de lectores hispanos pidiendo que Ibarra tuviera su propia novela. Estoy muy contento de que les gustara. Yo disfruté escribiéndolo. Quizás algún día...

M: The Florentine Series is now completed in English with The Roman, but in Spanish we just have The Prince and The Raven. There's interest in the translation of the other books, and your fans are working hard to make it happen. When you're surrounded of that kind of support and energy, how do you feel as a writer?

La serie Noches en Florencia ahora está completa en Inglés tras la publicación de The Roman, pero en Español solo se han publicado El Príncipe y La Alondra. Hay interés en la traducción de los otros libros, y tus seguidores están trabajando duro para hacerlo posible. Cuando estás rodeado de esa clase de apoyo y energía, ¿cómo te sientes como escritor?

SR: I am so grateful. The Spanish speaking community around the world has adopted me. And this is a tremendously generous family to be adopted into. I want readers to know that I am also working hard to bring “The Shadow” and “The Roman” to Spanish speaking readers and I hope I have good news soon. In the meantime, thank you for your support and for telling your friends and family about my novels.

M: Actually you're working on a new project. You’ve shared some teasers on your social networks. We know it will be a romantic suspense kind of story (again, exploring a different sub-genre). What can you say about this book?

Actualmente trabajas en un nuevo proyecto. Has compartido algunos detalles en tus redes sociales. Sabemos que será una historia de suspenso romántico (nuevamente explorando un subgénero diferente). ¿Qué puedes decir sobre este libro?

SR: Yes, my new novel is contemporary romance suspense and it is set primarily in Paris. 

The female lead is Brazilian and her name is Acacia. I can’t say too much about it but her experience of being away from her country and being an immigrant in France is part of the story. And the male lead is an honourable but mysterious figure…


Sí, mi nueva novela es de suspenso romántico/contemporánea y está ambientada principalmente en París. 

La protagonista femenina es brasileña y su nombre es Acacia. No puedo decir mucho, pero su experiencia estando lejos de su país y siendo inmigrante en Francia es parte de la historia. Y el protagonista masculino es una honorable pero misteriosa figura.

M: Is there another genre (different from Romance) or a romance sub-genre you want to explore anytime soon?

¿Hay algún otro género (diferente del Romance) o subgénero que te gustaría explorar en el futuro?


SR: I’d like to write a historical novel.

Me gustaría escribir un romance histórico.
