My Review

I've said too many times how much I love finding new authors to read. Also I've said how much I love romance books and comedies. Well, Excess Baggage combine all of that: It's a romantic comedy written by a new author (for me). 

With a fresh and light first person narration, Laura Barnard tell the Erica's story. She's a girl trapped in a relationship where she's no longer happy. This lover boy was her rock, her partner, her friend... but he's not rocking her world. When her mom is about to start her last round of chemo, Erica and her girl friends take a holiday in an island, and for the first time in a long time she's thinking about let loose a little.  

But Erica is one of the most unlucky characters that I've ever read about, because when she's supposed to be having fun and forgetting, she met with a ghost from her past: Jack. An older and sexier version of her teenage first love.

Erica is a funny character. She's lovely and caring, smart and beautiful, but she's always in the most ridiculous situations. It's hilarious! 

Note-to-self: Never buy swimsuits in facebook's boutiques. 

Jack, in the other hand, is taking a holiday with his pals. And when he saw Erica, the one who got away, he knows he's in troubles. He can't offer her a future, he only can give her those holidays. But once they let go and give themselves to love, all the time in the world seems to be not enough. They will want more. 

I loved this book. It was lots and lots of fun. I hadn't expectations about the story, but I was pleased and suprised with the development. The funny situations, the dialogues, the interactions between Erica and her friends (also between Jack and his friends, and between Jack's friends and Erica's friends...) and how the love story evolved was simply great. Hope this isn't the last time Laura Barnard write about this particular gang.


Love isn't always enough to keep to persons together. And Jack is hiding something. Will Erica accept what Jack has to offer? Even with his Excess Baggage? You need to read this book to find out (you will not regret it).

My Austen Inspirations series is loosely based on Jane Austen’s works, some more than others. Emma’s Match features my character, Emma Wallace, a modern version of Austen’s Emma. She first came into being in the second book in the series, None But You, as the heroine’s best friend. My goal was to craft her personality as closely as I could to Austen’s Emma, while setting her in modern-day South Carolina. She’s well-bred and classy, and while some may see her a snobbish, she has a generous heart and the best intentions when matchmaking her friends. But Emma’s Match is not the story of Emma Woodhouse and George Knightley. What I set out to do was to take her character, add similarities to the original Emma, but make it my own story. And while None But You has many similarities to Persuasion, it’s also a new story. Following the original books exactly didn’t work for me, it felt too much like being boxed in. Obviously women of today have more opportunities than women in the early nineteenth century, but human emotion hasn’t changed. The internal struggles women faced then with things like self-image, financial security, and understanding the opposite sex remain today. Using Jane Austen’s characters as a springboard, I allowed myself the freedom to go in new directions. Pride and Butterflies shares simply a theme with Pride and Prejudice: first impressions can go seriously wrong and opinions can change. These heroines are women striving to succeed in building their own businesses, and struggling with personal weaknesses, when the leading man either unexpectedly crashes into the back of her car, suddenly reappears seven years after a broken engagement, or lives down the hall and has no idea of her feelings. All three of the books in this series can be read on their own. They’re filled with clean romance and plenty of humor. Austen, of course, was the first to combine humor and romance.

Hace días que no leía algo en español. Buscaba algo ligero, divertido y romántico, entonces empecé a buscar entre las diferentes opciones que tenía en mi Kindle. Allí estaba Misión Hippy esperándome desde hace un tiempo, y me dije ¿por qué no?

No tardé más que algunas horas en devorar la historia de Martín y Zoe, de reírme con las ocurrencias de una liberal abogada que apareció en la vida del teniente Galán colgando de un poste después de colocar una pancarta, de gruñir cual perro rabioso con la terquedad del mencionado militar, quien pensaba podía salir ileso de su encuentro con esta bomba de vestidos floreados y lengua afilada, y de disfrutar una novela en la que cualquier cosa podía pasar.

Había leído muchos comentarios sobre esta novela y autora, todos muy positivos, ahora entiendo la razón. Tessa C. Martín nos cuenta esta historia con una narración ágil, describiendo personajes muy reales, muy humanos, con los que puedes sentirte identificado. El humor está muy presente en esta historia, pero también hay una trama muy seria (y muy bien desarrollada) que te hará reflexionar sobre muchos aspectos. 

Al final de la lectura seguramente pensarás mejor antes de juzgar a las personas sin darte la oportunidad de conocerlas ;)
